Changes in bio waste sorting obligations and waste management

Starting from July 2024, the obligation to sort bio waste will be extended to cover a large part of the residents of detached houses in the area of municipality owned waste management company Kiertokaari Oy. The owner municipalities that are obligated to sort bio waste are: Hailuoto, Ii, Kempele, Lumijoki, Oulu, Pudasjärvi and Raahe.

Residents who live in a detached house located in an urban area, must sort bio waste by 19.7.2024 at the latest. You can either order your own bio waste bin to have in your yard or use the same bio waste bin with your neighbours. Alternatively, you can compost bio waste alone or with neighbours.

The obligation is based on the new Waste Act and local waste management regulations. The goal is to increase the recycling rate of bio waste significantly.
