You can recycle the following worn items washed and dried:

  • Jackets
  • Pants
  • Skirts
  • Shirts
  • Sheets
  • Towels
  • Tablecloths
  • Curtains
  • Fabric patches, at least 20 cm x 20 cm large

Pack the textiles tightly into a plastic bag. We recommend that you bring only 1–4 plastic shopping bags of textile at once. This ensures that the trolleys don’t get full immediately.

You cannot recycle the following items:

  • Carpets
  • Shoes, bags, belts
  • Hats, woolly hats, gloves, mittens
  • Underwear
  • Socks and tights
  • Pillows and blankets
  • Padding and stuffed animals

Dirty, wet, smelly textiles and textiles with pests can be placed in mixed waste.

Clothes stained with oil or paint cannot be recycled as textile waste.

You may deliver large loads of items unsuitable for recycling as mixed waste into the Waste Management Centre or waste stations.

Sorting

End-of-life textile is delivered into collection trolleys packed tightly in plastic bags. We recommend that you deliver a maximum of four plastic shopping bags of textile waste at once.

Utilization

End-of-life textile is sorted and packed in Oulu after which it is transported for further processing to south-western Finland in Turku’s waste management. The textile is turned into thread, fabric and different padding.

Some of the recycled materials are delivered for sale or utilized and re-used locally.
